Samak Souq
The Souq is located in a beachfront prime location which is not translated into the architectural language of the current structure. Currently, the market only fulfills the basic function of buying and selling locally caught fish which can be further improved. The current space can be revitalized to expand its functions to cater not only to fishermen but to neighboring residents, tourists, and beach regulars.
The Souq can also achieve better urban integration with the beach and the surrounding neighborhoods with the proper introduction of urban landscaping design.
Contemporary fish markets lean more towards combining social and public aspects with the Souq creating the so-called “food theater” experience which differs from the traditional utilitarian idea of the fish market. The market becomes more than a place you go to to buy or sell, but a place to linger.
